Paul - General Manager

My career started in 1983 with an apprenticeship in mechanical fitting, heavy platework and fabrication. Following this I served in a traditional style drawing office before founding CAD Works Design Engineering in 1993.

CAD Works has given me the freedom to gain experience in areas of engineering that I would never have thought possible since those early days of grinding and cutting metal. (Which I still enjoy when given the chance!)

What would you class as the basic foundations of the ‘CAD Works way’?

It’s important not to lose sight of traditional engineering practices which I like to think we pride ourselves on, but it’s also great to harness some of the tools now available to the modern engineering designer.

So far during our history we have had the opportunity to be involved in various industries that require engineering services of some sort. We also get the chance meet a broad range of interesting and knowledgeable people involved in these industries. The knowledge and experience we gain from these encounters are invaluable to the quality of our working life and only add to what we can offer for every subsequent project in the future.

What does the future hold for CAD Works?

We all have visions and dreams, and I feel privileged to be in a position where I have a great team of people to work with to realise these. The old ‘united we stand’ attitude goes a long way. And that also goes for the relationship we prefer to adopt with our clients. So long as we keep listening, absorbing the information and converting it, in a professional manner I hope that we continue to build an engineering practise that we can always be proud of.

Engineering in the United Kingdom has changed since the days of mass production but one of the strong points is the ability to adapt with ingenuity and improve, which is a major driving force in engineering. It’s important for us too – it makes our life more interesting, keeps the pioneering spirit alive and the foundations solid!"
